Clan culture, based on blood and kinship, is a major cultural feature of Chinese vernacular society. Clan culture not only has far-reaching effects at origin, but also continues to affect behavioral decision-making among migrants at destination. Based on the 2017 China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS2017) data, the Probit model regression shows that the clan culture at origin significantly promotes migrants to make entrepreneurial choices. The mechanism analysis shows that clan culture has an impact on migrants' entrepreneurial choices through the formation of a hometown social network and social trust. Further research finds that clan culture promotes the choice of survival-oriented entrepreneurship among migrants, but is detrimental to the entrepreneurial effect of opportunity-oriented entrepreneurs, and that the urban formal system can replace the influence of clan culture on entrepreneurship. The policy implication of this study is that efforts should be made to use the hometown network social organization platform, build a general trust culture that goes beyond intra-clan trust, as well as actively explore the establishment of traditional Chinese culture and formal system complementary role mechanisms to help migrants start businesses and achieve entrepreneurial effects in the cities.

The Influence of Natural Disaster Shocks on Rural Labor Migration and Governments Reaction in China

Population Research    2021, 45 (6): 29-44.
Abstract592)      PDF (14083KB)(199)       Save
Using the data of China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), this paper examines the influence of natural disasters on rural labor migration. The results show that natural disasters significantly increase the probability of rural labor outmigration. The impacts of different natural disasters, including floods, droughts, and other disasters, differ across regions. Natural disasters affect labor migration by increasing household agricultural income loss, credit demand, and aggregating relative poverty. Further analysis indicates that the implementation of disaster relief and reconstruction policies and the support from clan networks provide safeguards to resist disasters and reduce the possibility of labor outflow. In the face of violent natural disasters that families can hardly withstand, the policies are more effective. This study explores the effect of natural disasters on population migration in China, and provides suggestions for implementing population management policies and building a modernized natural disaster prevention government system.

Population Research    2017, 41 (2): 84-96.
Abstract396)      PDF (208KB)(874)       Save
Residential preference of new generation migrants is affected by their parents within the traditional family system, and we identify the causal effects based on a counterfactual framework in this study. It is found that migration experience of parents can influence children's residential preference directly,or by interacting with family's endowments including cultural capital, and social capital. Such intergenerational influence has gender difference. Mother's migration experience has stronger direct effects, while the interaction between father's migration experience and the family's social capital is more salient. The results suggest that migration behavior of parents is a major contributor to residential preference of the new generation migrants, because parents' migration experience is helpful for their children to achieve their goals.

Population Research    2014, 38 (3): 41-54.
Abstract1439)      PDF (418KB)(1640)       Save
As a part of the world migration trends,China's family migration reflects the common grounds of family migration across the world, and also manifests the particularity resulting from household registration system and land system of China. Influenced by the traditional family culture,Chinese rural families tend to conduct whole family migration. But the household registration system and land system reduce the possibility of settling down in cities. This paper analyzes the interaction between culture and institution of Chinese family migration. Comparing China's family migration with the internal migration in Western countries during industrial revolution, there are many differences in decision-making cycle,decision-making process, migration direction, timing and order. In a macro perspective,Chinese family migration pattern can be described as being“cumulative causation broken”,while in a micro perspective,it involves“multiplicity and multistages migration strategy”with the mediating effect of culture and institution.

Abstract2056)      PDF (828KB)(2124)       Save
Family migration is one of the major population trends inChina. By redefining the concept and types of family migration, this paper analyzes the patterns and current status of family migration in China using data from the 2010 floating population monitoring survey. Family migration canbe broadly divided into
complete and incomplete family migration. Migration behaviors and processes are influenced by a variety of factors including economic level   and household size and structure. In familysplit migration, migration tends to be selective in family members identity, human capital and time interval of migration. The paper suggests that the government adopt supportive policy to improve the service management system for the migrant families. Specific policy measures may include promoting reform of the household registration system, and establishing the administration and service system covering the whole family life cycle and a complete range of types of migrant families.

In achieving universal welfare, early family policies in the Western countries were to reduce family poverty, and to enhance the welfare of their citizens. The Western countries completed the demographic transition in the 1960s to 1970s and family patterns changed dramatically. In order to accomplish their population and development strategy, family policies which oriented to universal welfare covering all citizens gradually changed into ensuring family welfare as well as encouraging population growth. The main policy instruments of the family policies in Western countries include family allowance and family tax reduction, maternity leave,child-raising allowance and job protection, child care facilities and education policy.Learning from policy experiences in Western countries and addressing the requirements of family development capability construction in China′s twelfth five-year plan period, this paper proposes a basic policy approach, that is ’ Ensure the basic needs, extend the coverage to all families, and integrate welfare into population regulation.

In this paper,we use Todaro migration model as the main tool to analyse current phenomenon of large-scale migrant workers returning home. This paper considers that expected income gap between rural and urban areas influences the supply of labor force;the demand for labor is affected by urban real wages and the policy parameters;the financial crisis being an exogenous variable affects the labor supply-demand balance. Finally we advance relevant policies according to Todaro migration model.
